Dr S Umamaheswara Reddy, an Outstanding Scientist (Sc. ‘H’), retired as the Director of the Microwave Tube Research & Development Centre (MTRDC), DRDO, Bangalore, on 31 May 2021.

He holds a Ph.D. in Electronics specializing in Microwave Tubes from the Indian Institute of Technology BHU, Varanasi. Dr Reddy initially worked with M/s BEL, Machilipatnam, as a deputy engineer and worked on developing night vision devices. He joined MTRDC as Scientist ‘B’ in May 1987 and took over responsibilities such as Project Manager, Group Head, Divisional Head, & Project Director. He has contributed to several projects and technologies. He has been designing and developing various Helix-and Coupled-Cavity TWTs for Defence Systems, MPM-based Transmitters, High Power Microwaves – Directed Energy Weapons, Vacuum Electronic Devices, etc.
